The Nigerian brand, àga concept, prides itself in being an ‘urban design and culture brand’. And for good reason. They have differentiated themselves amongst most African brands by incorporating a minimalist style to their kitchen tools and utensils. They have so many too – spoons, bowls, chopping boards, mortars and pestles, spice bowls, handle bowls…all beautifully made of wood.
We got the opportunity to have a brief chat with Olubunmi Adeyemi, the Nigerian designer behind àga concept.
What inspired the Aga Living concept?
The àga concept was inspired by everyday African culture and functional design. The word “àga” is a yourba word, a popular language in West Africa meaning a functional wooden object. The àga concept is a fusion of heritage and the neo contemporary lifestyle in Africa.
What single message do you aim to get across with your minimalist design?
Minimalism is all about less is more, our society today is quite hectic, from our busy lifestyles to the hassle of everyday living. Our message is to soften our lives and get back to our roots in a contemporary urban way.
How is the approach to design changing in Africa?
Design like I always say is a force, every single object used today was designed. Africa is a land filled with creative energy, it’s in our DNA to create from music, art, fashion, poetry, photography and design. It’s time we embrace this energy and use it for change in our society and this great continent.
